The Canadian Obesity Network-Réseau canadien en obésité (CON-RCO) will convene the
2nd National Obesity Summit on April 28-May 1, 2011 at the Le Centre Sheraton Hotel Montréal, Quebec.

Summit Goals
The goals of this Summit are:
  • To provide an interactive forum to share current understanding of the causes, complications, treatments and prevention approaches for obesity
  • To be a platform for exchange of obesity research from epidemiology and public health to cell biology, energy regulation, clinical management and health policy
  • To support students and new professionals and increase interdisciplinary capacity among future obesity researchers and health professionals in Canada
  • To provide networking opportunities for creating inter-sectoral research and knowledge translation partnerships
The conference will bring together approximately 800 participants from a wide range of educational institutions, governmental and non-governmental agencies, and the private sector.

We will try to accommodate the majority of abstracts; however, the final decision about acceptance of and presentation format for individual submissions will be made by the Summit Planning Committee. Submissions are encouraged in all formats.

Abstracts for Oral Presentations
Oral presentation abstracts can take one of two formats:
  1. Reports. The first format is the traditional meeting abstract with a clear aim, brief description of methods, results and conclusions. This will be focused on a single topic and can be presented by Trainees or Principal Investigators. It is expected that the first author will present the work. These presentations will be given in concurrent sessions with a cross-theme orientation.
  2. Overviews. The second format is designed for Principal Investigators or senior Trainees and is an overview of the subject of your research focus, presenting key findings in broad context. The abstract will be written for broad understanding. These oral presentations will be given in sessions with a cross-theme orientation.
Each oral presentation will be 15 minutes followed by a 5 minute discussion period. Up to sixty-four abstracts will be accepted as oral presentations.

Abstracts for Poster Presentations
We also encourage presentation of work in poster format, an exhibition which will enable discussion with presenters. Poster authors will be asked to stand by their poster during scheduled poster presentation times. Abstracts should take the form of traditional meeting abstracts with a clear aim, brief description of methods, results and conclusions.

Submission Process
Abstracts must be written in English or French. The length of the abstracts is the same for oral and poster presentations: a maximum of 250 words in the body of the abstract, plus title and author(s) names and affiliations. No references or acknowledgment sections are required.

You can choose to submit abstracts for oral or poster or both, but the Summit Planning Committee will make a final format recommendation based on the overall submissions in order to develop a comprehensive and compelling program. THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS October 1, 2010. No changes will be possible after the abstract submission deadline.

Abstracts must be submitted electronically through the Summit website via the online submission system.

You will need to set up a free personal account in which you can create, edit and submit abstracts. You may submit more than one abstract using the same account. Please fill in all the required fields. Abstracts sent by e-mail, mail or fax will not be accepted. In case of problems please contact the Canadian Obesity Network (summit@obesitynetwork.ca ).

Confirmation
Authors will be notified of the abstract review outcome on or before November 1, 2010. Further presentation instructions will be given to authors at that time.

It is our intention to accept as many high-quality abstracts as can be accommodated by the venue and schedule.

Presenters’ Responsibilities
All abstracts must contain original data not previously presented or published. The responsibility for the abstract contents is solely of the author(s). The presenting author is required to ensure that all co-authors are aware of the contents of the abstract before submission. Abstracts will be considered only if consistent with the above instructions and received by the deadline.

Presenters are responsible for all expenses related to participating in the conference, including transportation, registration fee, lodging, and meals.

Prizes will be awarded for the best student presentations.
